Morning Fuel: Doomtree - The Bends
I’m perpetually disappointed in myself for being so late to the Doomtree party. I remember seeing POS open for Atmosphere aeons ago, in which POS performed in front of a crowd and stopped in the middle of his unusual set (he had a weird little boombox behind him playing all of his beats?) and said “How many of you don’t have a clue what the fuck to do with me right now?” A lot of people raised their hands. I may have been one. That alone should’ve won me over, but it wasn’t until No Kings forced its way into my consciousness that I began to listen.
There are a lot of good tracks on All Hands, even if it may not be the masterpiece that is No Kings, it has a more mature and complex sound. The Bends, the more I listen to it, is my favorite. That chorus, with the harmonious howl joined by a robot cry (is that what it is in the background?), is so visceral. The verses are, as usual, great and the production is, as usual, somewhere between a sonic assault and a polished pulsar of synths and drums. I’ve seen Dessa live, which was a whole other experience, but I have yet to experience the sound all of this is.
